okay, now i've "only" seen Steve three times this year, so i won't you guys to stop bragging about seeing him in San Francisco!!!!  no, just kidding....kind of!!   here i am in Minnesota, then dead season right around the next bend, and i don't know when he will be back here....i wouldn't advise anyone visiting here in winter, but that's just me...i am not a snow person at all.....born and raised in Texas and still can't stand the cold....the winters last so damn long, too...

sigh...have a great time at HSB....think of the rest of us who are not there!

Sorry winter is coming Missin'!  Although, it is a good time to build a fire, have a nice cup of coffee, read a good book...  :)

I looked at the HSB schedule this morning and found out that Steve Earle is playing at 6 on Sat. and Mickey Hart is playing at 5:45 on a different stage!  I thought to myself, "How in the world could they schedule these two great acts at virtually the same time?!"  Then I realized that there probably aren't a lot of Deadheads who are Steve Earle converts!  After a short internal wrestling match I have decided that I can't miss Steve and the Bluegrass Dukes.  I feel like I am about to commit mutiny!  :)

    hey girlfriend...

ah, hell, i am always on the wrong side of the road to catch the bus....

heck, no, don't miss Steve!!!   i am already in withdrawals from that drug...I don't know when he's coming back to this part of the world, wish it would be before the tundra freezes...

we have a gas fireplace...i reckon i could go sit in front of it and read...i'm halfway through a good bio on Catherine the Great.....

my husband wonders how pompous that must have sounded, when she introduced herself,
    "Hello, I'm Catherine.....the Great...."  yeah...

    me, jbb

Not only that but Emmylou Harris and Iris DeMent are also scheduled for the same time on Sunday. Shoot! My life revolves around seeing Emmylou close HSB every year (I lead a simple, boring life), but this year I'll be seeing Iris DeMent instead. But Emmylou will also appear on Saturday as a member of Three Girls and Their Buddy, so I will be able to get my yearly dose of Emmylou.

Re: Steve and the Bluegrass Dukes!

I ended up opting out of the Bluegrass Festival!  I just couldn't make myself face the throngs of people in the too crowded park, especially after it had just rained!

So sorry to say I missed Steve and the Bluegrass Dukes.  I do wonder how it was...haven't heard a single thing about it.

Some good old friends of mine went to the festival from L.A. ~ they go every year...but they went to see Mickey Hart who played at the same time as Steve.  LOL!

    re: You Tube

I'm sorry you missed it iris! Sad I was over on you tube earlier, and there are some new videos posted from the HSB Festival - sounds like it was a good concert!

    Re: re: You Tube

I was at HSB 8 all 3 days, catching part or all of the sets by about 20 of the 70-some performers, and I wrote an overview of it for the Iris DeMent yahoo group. Here's what I had to say about Steve:

And then on to Saturday's closer, Steve Earle. The bad news is that Steve didn't
bring along Allison this time; the good news is that he didn't bring the DJ
    either. It was
strictly bluegrass with the Bluegrass Dukes all the way. In his Allen Ginsberg
    guise and
wearing a hat, Steve seemed in especially high spirits. His potty mouth was
    somewhat
restrained and his political comments were all but absent. Maybe his best line,
    in
introducing "Dixieland," was "It never ceases to amaze me all the pinko shit I
    can sneak in
on a Bluegrass record." It was 15 or so of his songs that lend themselves to
    Bluegrass
arrangements, including "John Walker's Blues," which, with some lyrics in Arabic
    and done
in Bluegrass style, is sure to piss off the plastic patriots. Steve and the band
    ended their
set with a rousing version of Woody's "This Land Is Your Land," and the encore
    was Steve's
    "Copperhead Road."

The highlights of the festival for me (other than Steve, of course) were Ralph Stanley, Jimmie Dale Gilmore guesting with Iris DeMent, and,  especially, not one of the scheduled acts but a couple of buskers who call themselves MoZo. Check them out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LaDUnWwoOo

I won't re-post all of my review here, but if you really, really, really want to read it, it's in three installments at http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/NoTimeToCry/ (I'm "tvzetc" there).
