Re: First Steve Earle song I heard
I haven't heard anyone mention his "Revolution" cd. That was REALLY the first one I ever listened to. Heard him talk about making this album in a book I was reading called "Rednecks and Bluenecks" (Good book btw), and thought it sounded interesting. Went out and bought it and have been hooked ever since. Of course I now have most of his stuff, also love Guitar Town, but back when that came out I was NOT into Country music at all. Then again, Steve's like Todd Snider, hard to classify and that's why I love them both!

A fellow Todd Snider fan, awesome! You have no idea how many arguments I’ve had with people over who really wrote “Alright Guy”.

Re: First Steve Earle song I heard
Funny how we all remember our first Steve Earle song so clearly. There was life and music before and then...everything changed! My first song was Condi, Condi which Steve was playing live at the KFOG radio station out of San Francisco early one morning. I was completely blown away by his voice and by his blatantly truthful attitude. Prior to this I had never come across anything even remotely as moving. I bought The Revolution Starts Now that same day and I have listened to few other artists since. Very few! I am so glad I turned on the radio that morning!

Re: First Steve Earle song I heard
tuco:First song of Steve's I heard was 'Copperhead Road' played on an old tv show ('The Power Hour') that played metal/rock videos. I liked it but never bought the album. Then a few years ago I picked up the 'Devil's Right Hand' commpilation on a whim and then 'Jerusalem' shortly after that. Haven't looked back since.
The power hour now your talking! I used to set the video every Friday night for that. Do you remember the bird in the leather fit but her foundation seemed to hide a million zits? Jakki someone I think.

Re: First Steve Earle song I heard
deebee76:The first one I heard was, like a lot of people, Copperhead Road in 1987. I was young and into metal at the time, and I liked the song right away.
Seems to be a common thread - heavy rockers getting mugged by country music. In 1987, 'Copperhead Road' became a weekly floor filler on rock night at Rock City in Nottingham. I was hooked and picked up his earlier stuff too at that time. I lost Steve completely during the 90s (as he did for much of it) until I bought 'Transcendental Blues' on a whim, and got reeled in all over again.

Re: First Steve Earle song I heard
I was playing in a heavyish rock band, touring through Victoria (Australia), when I heard Copperhead Rd on the cable TV while I was getting a beer out of the minibar. I stopped in my tracks. That was IT for me....

It wasn't always called The Power Hour was it? I don't remember the girl though...

Re: First Steve Earle song I heard
There can only be ONE "Alright Guy",(Todd Snider!!!), and of course he wrote it! Going up to Annapolis this weekend to see him at the Rams Head Tavern. He'll be appearing with a group called "WAS (Not Was). Ever heard of them 'cause I haven't. Anyways, I am looking forward to seeing ol' Todd again!

Re: First Steve Earle song I heard
I worked in a record store in college. Once a week I would spend the day listening to the promo tapes/Records/CD's. There was a "shitty" cassette with in a simple blue cover, looked like the songs were typed on with a type writer. It was Copper Head Road. I wore that thing out. I have been "in love" with Steve ever since.

Re: First Steve Earle song I heard
Guitar Town. Bought the cassette (my turntable was in another state). I wasn't a "country music" lover, but something about that tune captured me. I've been a big fan ever since. With each new album, I always ask "How does he do it?" I mean, Steve has never even had close to a "dog"!
