    The Dukes

Did you know Steve wanted Eddy Shaver to play on Copperhead Road CD and to join the Dukes?

Custer behind drums is superb enough, and if I imagine Eddy Shaver's guitar, I would practicaly be a dream band!!

    Re: The Dukes

Does anybody know what the Dukes get up to when they're not touring/recording with Steve?

    Re: The Dukes

I know when Custer was with Steve back in 1996, he just worked on his own material in between working for Steve and waited for the phone call to ask him into the studio to record El Corazon.  Of course, the phone call came, but it was after Steve had recorded it! I was with him when that call came....he wasn't too impressed, but thats the music industry for you!

And for those of you who don't have the liner notes for El Corazón, this guy:

played drums for the most part on the album. His name is Brady Blade, he is a damn fine drummer who has worked a lot with Emmylou over the years.

Unrepentant > You told us and I am always getting angry at Steve rememebering this. + Angry that he couldn't hear the difference between Custer and Will Rigby for example (not to mention the DJ Angry ).

Brady Blade sounds very good to me at Heavy Metal Bluegrass. But Rich has heard him playing the Unrepentant with snares instead of beats and vice versa or somehing like that :)

This is the Steve's Brady Blade? - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRj3G-r3_4Y   Surprise Sounds cool! And I can read, he lives in Sweden! Ha!

But Custer is the best. I wonder why he doesn't play with anyone famous now. I listened to samples of his solo albums at CD Baby but I wasn't much interested.

Two musicians of my entrire music colletion were appreciated by my friend/s rocker/s. Custer and Eddy Shaver.

I only know that Craig Wright played with Shaver. + information at SteveEarle.net
What Kelley Looney, Eric Roscoe Ambel and Will Rigby do now, no one knows ;-)

Yep, thats Brady Blade on that clip and he doesn't impress me much in all honesty.  Its pretty basic drumming and what i call 'safe'.  However, he is a whole lot better that Will Rigby!

Yes, I saw Steve in 1997 at Shephards Bush, London and indeed, Brady Blade drummed The Unrepentant backwards from the end of the last verse all the through to the end! I couldn't believe it.  I wouldn't expect a local pub band to make such basic errors.

Anyway, all history now.... I've learnt to ignore such things with Steve as The Dukes now are certainly no E-Street Band but its Steve's songwritng and his own individual performance that never fails to impress.

    Re: The Dukes

Don't know about the others, but Eric Ambel plays with The Yayhoos, alongside ex Georgia Satellites frontman Dan Baird. Not heard much by them except one track that plays over the closing credits of the movie "Slither", that was out a couple of years ago. At the moment I think he's producing the new Bottlerockets album.

I've got a recording of Steve and The Bottlerockets doing 'Guitar Town' and 'Dead Flowers' live. No idea when it was recorded (or where). It's really chaotic and raw - great stuff.

To each is own of course. Personally I think it's a relief that he concentrates on the groove first and foremost and doesn't pepper his beat with odd paradiddles in 5/4 or something as obnoxious.

Speaking of 'pepper', Rich - what do think of Stanton Moore?

(If anybody gets that, you will be awarded with 100.000 credits!)

Hey, Custer is genius Super AngryWink
I first began notice drumming when I saw him in To Hell And Back and I was completely excited with it (and so my friend, musician, with the drums). And don't forget Rich is a profi drummer Stick out tongue

If I remember well, you are primary a bass player, aren't you? What do you think about Kelley Looney? I must confess, I can't judge bass playing, unless it's apparently bad.

    Re: The Dukes

Yes, Stanton Moore sounds good from the sound bites on the website there. Quality drumming....

Another one of my favourite drummers is Teddy Campbell.  He is something else.

Even though bass is one of my weaker instruments, I actually rate Kelley Looney very highly as a rock bassist. I am reaslly glad Steve stuck with him throughout the years.  He is very solid.  This is why him and Custer together created the most watertight Dukes ever.  I know why Steve at the time chose to split it up, but he could easily resurrect it now if he wanted to.   Custer would love to I know. If only Steve knew....

    Re: The Dukes

I think Kelley Looney is the best bass player (this far) that has ever played with Steve. Not only does he play a mean bass, with a low end sound that you don't normally hear in rock or country-rock, he looks cool as hell on stage as well!

A major influence for me, alongside Geezer and Mike Dean.

    Re: The Dukes

I agree with you guys. Kelley is just fantastic to watch and listen to. His low end just rumbles like thunder. Crank the new Austin DVD and hear him at his best...so thick!

I'd just like us all to take a moment to think about the genius that is Black Sabbath.

     Rock on!
