    Magniers advert

I was a little surprised to see 'Galway Girl' being used to advertise cider on TV recently.

It is kinda fucked up. This has been discussed a lot already, and if there's one thing I don't agree with Steve on, it's his stance on commercials. BUT! It is his music, and he is free to do whatever the hell he wants to with it.

At least it's not advertising for Halliburton. I have to say I'm slightly disappointed but as you say it's his music. He's still the man though.

    Re: Magners/Bulmers advert

OK, lots of people can drink beer/ale/whisky/whatever and then some can't or shouldn't.  Galway Girl is Steve's property and he has the right to choose to use it.  It is not like he is rich or anything because he is not, not when measured comparatively against other performers these days.  And yeah, he is a long time recovering addict and will be for the rest of his life just like anyone else in recovery and he never made a secret of that either.  Fail to see why this is such a big deal, he's never made any bones about what he is about and the freedom of choice.  So if he played in a bar in NYC, you wouldn't drop in to listen?  Or if he was at an outdoor concert (where they all serve beer) , you wouldn't jump at the chance to go?

    Re: Magniers advert

I don't see what the big damn deal is. I've never known anyone who maintained their alcohol habit with cider. Besides...sometimes's it better - in the bigger picture - to make a connection with people open to buying cider, or hell, people sinning in any way. Not everyone has a problem and preachin to the choir ain't gonna save as many souls as preaching to the sinners is gonna save.

    Re: Magniers advert

Got to admit I'm with the last couple of posts on this.  Its not like he's lent the song to Robert Mugabe to use on his election campaign.  Steve doesnt get a lot of radio play in England so if people are introduced to his work and opinions through this then its worth it to me.

    Re: Magners/Bulmers advert

I don't have a problem with alcohol,  I  just  was surprised  that  he would endorse it with his music,  with him being a recovering addict. The character he plays in The Wire I imagined being pretty close to the real thing and he wouldn't endorse dope. I know alcohol is socially acceptable and I drink it myself, but if it was invented today it would be banned tomorrow.

I don't think any less of Mr. Earle for doing it, and I know he's not in the top league of earners, and I think his music is all the better for it, but I suppose he has to keep himself  stocked with guitars .

I've seen all those people in the magners ads
But none of 'em looked like me
