Understanding Each Other In Five Albums

If you were to give someone five albums to introduce yourself to them, what would they be?  This isn't a desert island list.  This should be the five albums you would have someone listen to that they could understand your taste or your person.

     I think, maybe:

    A Ghost Is Born -Wilco
    Children Running Through -Patty Griffin
    Blues For Allah -Grateful Dead
    Sign O The Times -Prince
    Bluefinger -Black Francis

this sort of thing is never easy....

    the beatles' revolver

the band's music from big pink

    john hiatt's bring the family

    muddy waters' folk singer

    crosby, stills, & nash's crosby, stills, & nash....the debut

i think there's about five others i'd smuggle to the island though.

Man, I suck at this, but I'll try...

Old Crow Medicine Show - Self Titled
    Son Volt - Trace
    Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
Steve Earle - Train a Comin'

See, here's the problem. Not all my favourite albums fit, and that list could change tomorrow if I found the right record in my collection.

How about five favourite artists? That one is easier - almost...

    Steve Earle
    Bob Marley
    John Prine
    Rolling Stones
    Toots and the Maytalls
(with honourable mention to The Band)

Re: Understanding Each Other In Five Albums

Great idea. One problem though, I started compiling a list, and ended up with 53 albums, all of which felt essential. I narrowed & narrowed it down until I broke a sweat. Now I am down to 20, and I honestly can't get any further without a nervous breakdown. Sorry for cheating!

    Steve Earle - Transcendental Blues
    Slayer - South Of Heaven
The Pogues - Rum Sodomy & The Lash
    Black Flag - Damaged
    Tom Waits - Bone Machine
    Motörhead - Another Perfect Day
Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
    Alice In Chains - Dirt
Billie Holiday - Lady Sings The Blues
    Black Sabbath - Sabotage
    Primal Scream - Vanishing Point
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Rastaman Vibration
Machine Head - Through The Ashes Of Empires
    Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
    John Coltrane - Soul Trane
    Whiskeytown - Faithless Street
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile
    Metallica - Master Of Puppets
Corrosion Of Conformity - In The Arms Of God
The Clash - Super Black Market Clash

See, I had to leave out Marvin Gaye, Wilson Picket and Jimi Hendrix to name a few. How heartbreaking is THAT!?!

Umm, no. Although I don't want to pigeonhole me in any way, I like Fish-era Marillion, King Crimson, early Jethro Tull and the mighty TOOL.

Massey Hall thing is excellent.   The A Man Needs a Maid/Heart of Gold medley is my favorite.  It's probably my favorite live Neil now, though I still don't have Live Rust to judge it.

     Also: everyone likes Tool.

There are many more, but I will keep it to five.
