Who are the musicians and what Steve songs do you play?
I saw Viky in a previous thread looking for some chords. I went out and jammed last night with my buddies, as I do most Wednesday nights, and we know a TON of Steve songs. In fact, we were joking that we might as well just start a cover band, because it's all we bother to play lately! Got me to thinking this could be a resource for people who want to learn chords or lyrics to Steve's music, if they haven't already. I've noticed that sometimes the tab available on the Internet can be a little dodgy. I've also noticed that people often forget to use a capo when figuring out chords - it seems Steve uses his capo a lot, and it can really simplify things. I sing right in Steve's range - we have pretty similar voices (Steve is Steve, don't get me wrong!), so I can usually tell as soon as I open my mouth whether the chords I'm playing are right or not. Steve songs I know and play on guitar (might have some titles wrong here): Someday - The Rain Came Down - I Ain't Ever Satisfied - Tecumseh Valley - Mercenary Song - My Old Friend the Blues - Ben McCullouch - Goodbye - Still In Love with You - Pilgrim - Carrie Brown - Nothing Without You - Willin' - My Uncle - Ellis Unit One - Billy Austin - The Other Kind - Over Yonder - Steve's Last Ramble - I Don't Want to Lose You Yet - When I Fall - Copperhead Road - Even When I'm Blue - I Can Wait - Until the Day I Die - Sometimes She Forgets - Tennesee Blues - Halo 'Round the Moon - Graveyard Shift - Harlan Man - Home to Houston Actually we just learned Home to Houston last night and are working on Jerusalem and I Thought You Should Know. I think that's it - but that's enough! I've been listening to Steve since Guitar Town came out so I know lyrics to songs we don't play - yet. I've been singing and playing harp for years but I only came to playing guitar four years ago so I ain't that great and I let my buddy Doug do all the serious picking and lead work. I'm strictly rhythm, but I keep it solid and know the chords, so if I can ever help anyone sort out a Steve song they want to learn, just let me know. Cheers.

Re: Who are the musicians and what Steve songs do you play?
"Devil's Right Hand" is the only song I can play on both the guitar and the mandolin, and the only one I've played live (but not with the band). I've fooled around with "Goodbye", "The Other Kind" and "My Old Friend the Blues". "Guitar Town" is on the list of ones to learn (have you noticed that it has a bit of a funny rhythm and it's quite hard to get the lyrics over the top). But the one I really want to play is "Me and the Eagle". Fantastic song. Just can't get my head around what he's doing though. Any pointers will be much appreciated.

Re: Who are the musicians and what Steve songs do you play?
I am a former student of guitar, piano, and violin. Then I had a baby and then I got married and then I became a girl scout leader and then I got a divorce and then I became a full-time college student while working six shifts a week as a waitress then I graduated college and now I work my ass off all the time.
Now I play Guitar Hero III, air guitar, air mandolin, air banjo, dashboard drums, cowbell, triangle, bongos, tambourine, and harmonica. I can play any instrument on any of Steve's songs - I practice all the time! Of course, I especially love playing air guitar on "Breed" lol.....

We're called The Dives, and we currently play Copperhead Road, Angel is the Devil, Mercenary Song, Taneytown & Tom Ames Prayer. Solo, I find myself playing My Old Friend The Blues, Tennessee Blues, Carrie Brown & Valentine's Day. I've always wanted to do a gig dedicated to my heroes called Johnny, John & Steve. Johnny Cash, John Prine and Steve Earle. I think all three of them are very like-minded and I have a never-ending appreciation and gratefulness to all three of them. Some day, I'll find the right little dive bar, with the right crowd cast and I'll do it, and I'll do my best to make all three proud.

Re: Who are the musicians and what Steve songs do you play?
natron - were we separated at birth? I could probably play three nights straight on the Johnny, John and Steve that I know. Like you, I recognize that it would take the right audience and the right venue - unfortunately it has been my experience that the more people there are and the drunker they get, the more the music only becomes a soundtrack for their party. A night with music fans who were there to appreciate the tunes and could get into great songs they may don't know would be pretty special.

It's one of the great things about Steve's songwriting skill that he does the simple stuff so well...most people with basic guitar skills could play just about any of his songs if they put their mind to it....like the great man says "everything's in G"

Thanks so much, Jenny. When you're a writer, it's a good feeling when people connect with your stuff.
There's a great alt-country singer here in Melbourne called Cindy Boste. (on my band's myspace friend list) Her and I are planning a "Steve and Lucinda " night, when schedules allow.

Take this for what it is. I really don't play the guitar, I'm a bass player first & foremost, after that I'm a drummer! Anyway. This is me and my guitar, and it's about as lo-fi as it can get. You can actually hear the creaking of the chair I'm sitting on and the hissing of some traffic in the background. I originally sent this to a really special human being who seemed to like it, so I thought I'd share it with the rest of y'all. http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=6DD28E3C13959683 Oh and Steve... sorry if I f**ked your song up!

That was great! I like the way you put your own personality into the song and totally made it your own. It was very cool. Thanks for sharing.... next time I wanna hear your cover of "Breed."
