Steve Earl at Flores Country Store 4 26 08

So me and about 15 other folks spent $25 each to see Mr. Earle at Flores Country Store in Helotes, Texas this past weekend.  Flores has been around for decades and always is a great venue to see live music.  The atmosphere is always festive and I've never had a bad time there.  Well that is until this past weekend.  Upon entry of Flores we were all bewildered by the auditorium type seating arrangement in front of the bandstand.  We knew that something may be wrong.  We all knew that this was going to be an acoustic gig, which was ok by us.  Figured we would still get some good tunes to enjoy.  But alas, we did not.  Instead we were given the same four chords strummed over and over at a snails pace with hints of words that could not be recognized clearly.  Many of us found ourselves wanting to fall asleep because it sounded if the same song just kept on going and going.  But wait!  A DJ and a drum machine!  Yeah baby that rocks!  Not!

The highlight of our evening was at the bar where people usually drink and talk.  Ah but no, not here.   Apparently not allowed.  One of Mr. Earle's cult followers decided to join us at the bar and tell us to shush. "SHHHHHHH!"  he said.  "This is interesting!".  Yeah, sure it is.  If you have been labotomized first.  Another group of folks met the same SHHHHH from another follower.  So out of respect of the labotomized group of music go-ers, we decided to sit outside where we could at least enjoy the weather.  Problem was though, the walls weren't thick enough to drown out that melancholy, ho-hum, drum machine, DJ spinning 4 chord strummin', music.

"Drink up guys, let's get outta here."

    A) It's lobotomized, not "labotomized" B) There is a thread for whining about the DJ, please keep it there: http://www.steveearle.com/forums/thread/251.aspx

wow, you had the chance to be one of a handful at a Steve Earle show and you complain about the DJ????  i know the Flores Country store well, growing up in that part of the world and all, and i would have given my first born son (he eats too much anyway) to see Steve there.....

the DJ was different, but Steve does things in different ways...i don't like all of his music, about 10% probably and can't say he and i share total political views, but hell that show sounds incredible!!!  granted, i get a little crazy about Steve, i'm getting old and someone's left the pasture gate open most of the time here, but i think i am fairly unbiased about his work (ha!)

sorry you had such a bad time.....but, you really don't know how lucky you were...

Freedom of speech! Freedom of speech!

If you don't like DJ as well as many Steve's fans incl. me, feel free to express yourself wherever you want! Don't listen to all these fundamentalists. There is no kind of totality. We can say:

WE DON'T LIKE THE DJ! WE DON'T LIKE THE DJ! WE DON'T LIKE THE DJ!
(Nothing personal, simply any DJ in Steve's company)

    without any fear!!!

    calm down, Patrick Henry....

Viky, now how can you call me a fundamentalist???

i was just amazed that anyone could not have had a great time being that close to the music...

    amazed and envious...okay, i confess...

now, go back to your studies...no one is going to make you listen to the DJ...

Personally I liked the fact that per contract there were no cans or bottles at the show. I get very irritated  paying to see an artist only to hear the clink of bottles and cans being tossed out. Not to mention the rude people who sit at the bar and talk during an acoustic show.

Why do people pay a cover to sit and talk? Is it so you can go to work/school the next week and tell people how cool you are because you went to such and such show?

For the record I wasn't all that happy with the DJ either but for everything but Trans Blues it was at least tolerable if not enjoyable(Satellite Radio).

Not you, missin. And I would surely enjoy Steve even with the DJ. ;-) I just don't like that any time anyone new comes and says he doesn't like Steve's shows with DJ, he is immediately and automaticaly considered to be the worst criminal ever.

To my knowledge, nobody has ever said anything even close to that. If I am wrong, please paste a quote.

fun•da•men•tal•ism [noun] - strict maintenance of ancient or fundamental doctrines. I.e. opposing progression. Ex., 'There is no room in country for DJ:s'.

Re: Steve Earl at Flores Country Store 4 26 08

    I agree the show lacked.

Disappointed has a stance..As a first time listener of Earle..A true Quarter out of pocket..Not to mention gas..A DJ?..And right on about the seating..

I'm sorry about the shushing in the back..Chances are if you can't hear yourself talk than neither can Earle..The overall experience is what counts..And it sounds like some Earle fans..Took away from it..

I was there and agree with Disappointed on the chord bleeding frenzy..I understand Earle as a song writer but when I think about it (at least with this performance) I'd of much rather put my quarter in a juke box..

Better Luck on the next one Earle...

well, i reckon you are right...we do get a little defensive about The Man sometimes...but, not me!!  (big laugh here....)

and, i agree, too, everyone has the right to feel as they feel...like falling in love, you can't help what kinda music you like, you just like it...i may be a little drifty, but i still would have given up one, or two, of my children to be there at the Flores Store, back home in Texas, and that close to the fellow i'd like to take a twirl with...

(oh, man, is that tacky, or what???  my redneck is showing again....)

Re: Steve Earl at Flores Country Store 4 26 08

sorry you were disappointed.  We lovedthe show and appreciate his music in all its forms - have seen acoustic, bluegrass dukes, dukes etc.  This is just one other form.  Actually we were surprised at how much of the back catalogue was included given it was a washington serenade tour, and of course the DJ etc is an essential part of that album, so we expected it, and liked it.  And  he has been touring the Dj since at least october of last year.

We were happy to be seated, figured you could always stand at the bar and have a great view.  We're not from here, thought flores was a terrific venue, although the sound had a slightly hard edge. We did hear the sshher, and whilst we're not likely to shush anyone at that type of venue, it does puzzle me when people come along to shows and talk through them. So it was good of you to go outside - we appreciate it!

ended up seeing the same show in Austin the next night ( happy coincidence) . Theatre setting made for hushed audience and different vibe - reminds you that getting to see performers of this ability in small venues is a a great experience. we'll find our way abck to floores!

And whilst we're here - thought Allison Moorer did a great job too.
