Re: Magners/Bulmers advert
Just a final note on the use of Galway girl for the Magners Ad, I think it's very sad that a great song will forever be associated with pissed up people stumbling out of pubs and clubs, fighting, throwing up everywhere, collapsing and then abusing hospital staff when they come round in casualty. Very far removed from the bloody nonsense that the ad portrays of people having a few sips of the said brew, picking up their instruments and making beautiful music. I try to keep the man comfortable by purchasing everything he's recorded. I bought the slightly disappointing Live from Austin TX and I'll probably buy the DVD too. I don't think the ad will have people rushing to buy his music, even sadder is that it'll probably become a Karaoke favorite. I'm amazed that only one person actually agrees with me about this. I love the man's music, but it's the man's lyrics that make the songs even more important and I suppose that's where I find it hard to understand the reasons for allowing big business to use his music. His songs have to me always been about injustice, the working man, the unions and how business colludes with governments to shaft us.
We all need hero's, what would Woody have done? The irony of it is that if Steve Earle hadn't got strung out on drink and drugs for so long he would have been bigger than Bruce Springsteen and wouldn't need to get money from adverts. It might also have stopped Garth Brooks from being country musics biggest star. I'm probably gonna piss quite a few people of but I don't care, I feel quite strongly about it. Waitrose have started to use Canned Heat to advertise their services, maybe their market research have shown that many ex hippies like to pay more for their groceries.

Kevin, hi! First of all, don't feel let down that nobody (me being the exception) agrees with you. I stopped caring what people thought years ago. You find a moral that is working for you, and then you stick to it. I also agree (for the most part) with what you have written above. The legendary Minor Threat refused to participate in Rolling Stone unless they removed all the alcohol & cigarette ads, obviously Rolling Stone didn't do that, so there were no interviews with the mighty 'Threat. Trent Reznor refused to play the MTV music video awards, because they did not allow him to use a dancing George Bush as a backdrop - these are just two examples of heroes, to me at least. Steve Earle is also my hero - we may not agree on the use of his music in ads, but still, it does not diminish his work (at least not to me) as a protester and social conscience. He does use his stance as a public figure to try and make a difference, and that's more than you can say about most artists these days. And, most importantly - it is after all his choice.
Finally, it is my firm belief that we should not put too much trust into what other people do (especially musicians and/or artists). It is way more effective to get organized yourself. Now, I have a meeting with a barbell and some weights!

Re: Magners/Bulmers advert
I haven't lost my faith in Steve Earle, who else could fill that gap. Your right about morals and adhering to them, I tend to see things through my own set of principles and wonder why people don't see it the same way, People take different things from Mr. Earle than I seem to. But it's good to meet a kindred spirit . What else does he endorse, just out of interest? Epiphone guitars?

Re: Magners/Bulmers advert
Actually, I think he stopped using Gibson guitars (which own Epiphone), Steve got mad at them for - ummm... well it was something about putting all the smaller guitar shops out of business. Somebody might provide you with a proper link/info on this. As to what guitars he currently uses, that might be something for the upcoming Q&A if it happens.

Re: Magners/Bulmers advert & Steve Earle guitars
indygochild:According to the "other" SE website, Steve is endorsing Martin guitars and apparently there is a Steve Earle model available. If you go to www.steveearle.net and click on the articles link on the left side of the page, then go to the May 23 Music Radar article you can read about it.
Thanks for the heads up. A quick Google search turned up this link, with a photo of the guitar: http://www.modernguitars.com/archives/004425.html Here's another with a pic of Steve and the guitar: http://www.modernguitars.com/archives/004424.html tung

Re: Magners/Bulmers advert
Some artists who DON'T (correct me if I'm wrong):
Bruce Springsteen,
The Pogues,
Tom Waits,
Nine Inch Nails,
Metallica (didn't see that one coming, did ya!),
Neil Young,
Nick Cave
...among others. Not all hope is lost!

Kevin:Nice guitar, bit more class than an Epiphone.
Undoubtedly, yes. But I have played Epiphones, and I think they are fine instruments.

You can add my favorite band, Tool, to that list.

Yes, for fuck's sake... how could I forget the mighty TOOL!?! I still, after about 500 listening sessions, discover new things when I crank 10,000 days. Absolutely amazing stuff.
