    Down in Mississippi

I listened to the Atlanta concert on  92.9 Dave FM last night and got a taste of what I'll hear at Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi Wednesday night. I've never been to Oxford. My wife, Ginny and I are looking forward to it. The next night were headed to Clarksdale, Mississippi, just north of Rosedale, the home of the Delta Blues and the site of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads". There are some good tunes played at the jukejoints in Clarksdale.

I sure am glad that Steve has decided to play some venues in The South. There is no area on earth more needy than The South to hear a good Steve Earle concert. The last time I heard him was in Asheville, N.C. a few years ago.

John, you are so right about The South needing to hear more of Steve Earle! Sometimes it seems he is better know in Europe then right here in his own back yard.  I don't mean to say that I begrudge the Europeans, but we NEED him more Down South.

    Re: Down in Mississippi

i agree we need more of steve here in the south - but when only 500 or so folks show up for an awesome show such as he and allison put on in oxford town last night it's hardly surprising he doesn't show up down this way very often.  at least it wasn't the usual drunk as hell rednecks yelling for copperhead row the whole time.  the show was wonderful - one of the best steve shows i've ever attended.  everyone should do their best to make one of these.  it was surprising how little he talked during the show though - don't think i've ever known him to be so quiet between songs.  he did seem to look out pretty often and kind of snicker to himself - made me want to know what he was seeing or thinking that was making him laugh.  glad he was in a good mood though - it always shows in his music.

    Re: Down in Mississippi

The concert at the Gertrude Castellow Ford Center for the Performing Arts at the Ole Miss Campus was especially good for the Allison Moorer opening Wednesday night. It was so nice to hear her powerful but sweet voice resonate through this state of the art venue. The respectful and SOBER crowd of about 500 good fans hung on every word. It would have been nicer, however, had the attendance been closer to capacity.

I think that this is the first time that Ginny and I have ever had front row seats at a concert and it was even more thrilling that it was a Steve Earle concert. I have to admit a little anxiety because I knew Steve would be brave enough to talk a little politics and sing a few songs about peace and justice and it is unusual to speak out about these issues in Mississippi as well as my home State of Alabama without having a few dedicated neocons to heckle the performer but this crowd was respectful and even supportive. And, like Steve said, if there were and Republicans in the crowd, they did not want to be known by their other neocon friends as someone who would come to a Steve Earle concert, so perhaps they just kept their mouths shut. It’s amazing to me that there are still any Republicans left after what we’ve been through the last 7 years. You would think that if you are a believer in the teachings of Jesus Christ as “The Bible Belt” claims to be, Alabama & Mississippi would be the first to oppose our participation this immoral civil war that has been always going on in Iraq. Anyway, thanks again to Steve for speaking out in such a musically entertaining way! Please come back soon!

     We need you!

    Peace!! John

    Re: Down in Mississippi

Wow, really interesting tour stories from the southern U.S.  Thanks for sharing.  It never occurred to me that the crowds would be small.  In San Francisco the show I attended was sold out.  Well...the war, the reeps, and Bush...you are brave to mention it JohnFromBama!  I have nothing nice to say about any of the three so I shall remain silent and therefore maintain my composure!  Thanks again for the stories.
